Descartes’ın üzerinde sıkça durduğu rasyonellik, onun felsefesini çepeçevre kuşatarak, on yedinci yüzyıl rasyonalizminin kurucu kişiliğinin temelini ve modern felsefenin ana kaynağını oluşturur. Bundan sonra hep Kartezyen yöntem ve düşünceden bahsedilecek ve Aristotelesçi yöntem filozoflarca daha kesin bir şekilde eleştirilmeye başlanacaktır. Descartes, yöntemi uzunca tanımlamak yerine, ondan ne anladığını açıkça anlatma yolunu tutmuştur. Descartes’ın bilgi yönteminin özü, basit ve kolay yollarla apaçık bilgiler sağlamak olarak belirlenebilir. Açık ve seçik olan şeylerden ve ancak bilgi edinilebilen konulardan bahsetmek, Descartes yönteminin ana temasını oluşturur.

The rationality upon which Descartes dwelled frequently constitutes the basis of the founding personality of the seventeenth-century philosophy and the primary source of modern philosophy, by embracing his philosophy all around. Hereafter it will always be spoken of the Cartesian method and thought, and begun the Aristotelian method to be criticized more detailed by philosophers. Instead of describing the method long, Descartes has made it clear what he understands. The essence of Descartes’ method of knowledge can be defined as providing explicit information in simple and easy ways. The main theme of the Descartes method is to talk about what is clear and what is only knowable.
